Area 12 Dressage to music report

After a weekend of bad weather May 26th Bank holiday Monday was even worse with both rain and wind. Lynn Pugsley with Izzy (and superb driver/groom Andy!) braved the conditions to travel down to Kingston Mauward College in Dorset to compete in the British Riding Clubs Area 12 Dressage to Music Championships.

Lynn was successfully placed in the Novice test last year so this year decided to step it up and compete in both the Novice (no BD points) class and the open Elementary class. Creating floor plans and music to match is a significant undertaking, let alone doing two on the same day. Izzy decided that the weather was not quite for her in the Novice test, although she still went well enough to score 69% this was not sufficient for a placing. A couple of hours later and a change into a double bridle for the elementary test Izzy was much more helpful and produced a great test to score 65% and 5th place. This was a fantastic result as it was their first attempt at competing at elementary level, and most of the competition had BD points as horses can compete at this level with up to 199 points. Well done Lynn.

Area 12 Dressage, 19th January 2008, Kingston Maurward

Despite the inclement weather earlier in the week the winter area dressage was still able to take place with only a small amount of drizzle on the day. This competition had a new format this year with a mixed Preliminary and Novice test team with the best 3 team places to count. We were able to field 2 teams this year-just! One team was trying to achieve one of only 2 qualifying places for the national finals at Hartpury in April. The second team was of slightly more inexperienced horses none of whom had been to an area competition before so this enabled them to experience the more electric atmosphere of an area competition. The teams were as follows: Qualifying team- Sue Francis on Chita’s Lad- Novice test Martine Hazleton on Infinite Risk- Novice test Lynn Pugsley on Izzy- Prelim test Steph Boobyer on Taska- Prelim test Non qualifying team- Laura Boobyer on Perfect Storm- Novice test Sue Francis on Winsor Wonder- Novice test Bev Gore on Aspen Wytze- Prelim test

The scores were calculated by using the places of each team member in their arena (indoors or outdoors). The atmosphere did affect some horses, who struggled a little to contain themselves! It was particularly difficult in the indoor arena, (which can be scary at the best of times) with not a very considerate audience watching. None of the horses disgraced themselves though and they all came out with reasonable scores for their level and experience. With standards high and approx. 25 competing in each arena Lynn Pugsley and Izzy did very well to be placed 4th in their arena with 66.8% giving the qualifying team a great start. Martine was unlucky not to miss out on a placing with 10th on Infinite risk with 65%. The qualifying team all managed 60%+ scores and was placed joint 10th out of 25 teams which was a really good result. The non-qualifying team also did well, though they were a little further a way from the placings. I think all of the younger horses all learnt from their experience and will certainly be on more teams in the future.

Thanks: Special thanks to Sue Francis who kindly offered to take a second horse at the last minute which meant that the non-qualifying team existed, she then had to do her tests in quick succession which would be beyond most of us with the nerves of a competition. Thanks also to Pippa Dors who allowed Laura Boobyer to borrow her trailer when her horse Mulberry who was supposed to be competing unfortunately went lame before the competition. Also thanks to Bryony Allen who kindly offered her services to go and assist (an offer which was quickly accepted by Bev!) and enabled Bev to sort some of the paperwork out for me as I was unable to travel down on the day.

Blackdown Mendip, Area 12 Indoor Novice Team Indoor Show Jumping Championship
at Badgworth Sunday Jan.28th 2007

We hosted, with Blackdown Mendip, the Area 12 Indoor Novice Team Indoor Show Jumping Championship at Badgworth last Sunday Jan.28th.The teams were down on previous years but we still had plenty to fill the day.

Brent Knoll did very well in the Warm up class by taking 1st and 2nd places, with Kim Hill winning on Henleys One & Only and Sarah Bryant taking the second slot on Henleys Rhythm in Black. This proved a very good warm up as all the team jumped clear in the first round so went into the second round on a score of 0! Sarah and Kim again jumped clear. Carar Tyer had one fence down due to Red Hot and Ready to Rumble being a bit strong and Carar only having one good arm due to being involved in a car accident on Thursday, no it wasn't her fault, the car I mean! Laura Caville and Frankie were the discount score as things didn't go as well in the second round for them, enough said! We were by far the quickest team, so even though West Somerset finished on 4 we got the second place on time. Well done to all the team and a big thak you to those who came and helped.

Results for the Area 12 Championship were:

  •  1st Bath on 0

  • 2nd BKRC on 4

  • 3rd West Somerset on 4

  • 4th Wessex on 8

  • 5th Severn Vale Red on 8

  • 6th Witheridge on 8

Report on Area 12 Dressage 3rd July 2005

Sunday dawned a little damp from overnight rain so I was a little worried that it could be slippery underfoot at Stockland Lovell the venue for this years Area 12 Dressage qualifiers. However by the time the dressage started it had dried off and the going was pretty good, much better than the field opposite Taunton Racecourse that has been used for several years.

The event turned out to be well organised and results were much quicker this year which meant competitors were not left hanging around for hours for the results, as has happened in previous years.

Our team consisted of Amy Martin with Charlie Chequers, Kim Bowden with Touch of Frost, Jayne Tippetts with Poppy and myself (Bev Gore with George). We had entered as a qualifying team and had also entered different tests as individuals in order to give ourselves a second chance. In the Open Dressage three team members ride different Novice tests and one rides an Elementary or Medium. Amy had very bravely offered to do the Elementary, which considering Charlie’s tender age was indeed brave! Amy suffered a lapse of memory on several occasions during the test (which I also managed to do later on). Kim was not sure about doing Novice tests as she usually rides Prelim, but she had stepped in to replace other members who had to withdraw. Kim did very well and came a creditable 7th, which Jayne also managed with Poppy in Novice 32. I suffered a unique situation where I had to stop my test and tell the judge that I had gone wrong despite the fact that she had not noticed and didn’t beep!!!! Needless to say this put me completely off my stride. However we redeemed ourselves by coming 2nd as individuals in Novice 32 with less than half a percent between me and the person in first place! So I nearly had to make the long drive to Lincoln. I am not sure whether I am relieved or disappointed.

The final winners of the qualifying team competition were Severn Vale with Mid Somerset coming a very close 2nd.

In all it was a pleasant day and it was nice for us to have a presence in the dressage qualifier, and no we weren’t last! Next year we must organise a Novice team as well.  So come all you members and get practising now, I am sure we can rustle up four Prelim entries by next year.
