Sunday 7th August - Open Show
The Riding Clubs annual Open Show was held on Sunday 7th Aug at Lympsham. We had fantastic weather,
bright sunshine but with a breeze that kept you from frying, although the breeze played havoc with the paperwork at the secretary's tent and in fact launched the Gazebo at one point!
Showing classes were well supported with lots of classes having double figures in entries which always makes it more interesting to judge and watch.
The show jumping ring looked like a good course to jump Sam Pepperall usually builds a very nice course and the going was perfect. Entries for the show jumping were up on previous years, which is always a bonus when we have spent ages putting out jumps that will need to be collected back in, in less than 24hours! Thanks to Cara, Lyn and friends who stewarded that ring.
The Clear round ring was run very smoothly by new member Roy and his assistant Nikki, who is helping to organise the new show West Hewish on Sept 3rd, look out for schedules, so I expect he will be her assistant there! The clear round was so popular that I think we ran out of Rosettes, which will please Rowena as she won't have to store them!
The Fun classes were well supported and the Fancy Dress class was amazing. Janie Spicer took her 18 month old colt in and he was wearing a huge "blanket" of flowers and being very good about it too!
The bottom corner of the field was the Gymkhana ring and it was a mass of colour and activity as it was surrounded by lots of eager riders and ponies with family shouting encouragement.
The Dressage was well supported this year, with the first of 3 classes starting at 10am and the final rider going in just before 4pm, so our 3 judges, Sally Busby, Claire Badley and Charlotte Edwards were kept busy! Many thanks go to Vanessa Dawson, Rachel Frosts sister in law, who was very brave and wrote for the first 2 classes and she's not even a member and Sarah Longman who is a member and offered to write for the last class when we lost our writer at short notice. Becky Hall, one of the committee had to go almost last in the first class then first in the second class as she was needed for stewarding duties before and after both tests, although as she won the first class looks like she works well under pressure!
We were very lucky to have such nice Judges who gave up a Sunday to help make all this happen, no judge no show and many thanks to all the stewards especially Susan Rees who stayed all day as we lost our afternoon steward and ex member Andy Deacon who did a marathon stint for Mr Robert Pink, who started at 10am and finished about 5.40pm.
Pat and Kate Hanley judged the workers who had a very nice course to jump and Pat was in action the following weekend at Wick St. Lawrence! Susan Sheen came from Dorchester to Judge, so had an early start to be with us for 9.30. Jean Hutchins did the morning for us and then Beverley Gore the afternoon in ring 5.
On a final sad note, our thoughts went out to Julie Fowler who quite tragically lost her pony Dicks Folly in one of the show jumping classes. He was 26 years old and sadly had a heart attack while competing. Nothing can prepare you for loosing your best friend, but we hope Julie remembers the many happy times that they had together.
