Meet the Committee

Hilary Lewis – Chairperson

I live in Hutton, with hubby Rich, Doti a white boxer and have 3 horses. I have been a BK member for many years, on and off the committee, so some of you will know me I’m sure. I work in Bristol at the Childrens Hospital in the intensive care unit, light relief from horses! I had a pony in my early teens then came back to horses in my 30′s.

My 3 are, Bunny 28 who’s now retired having done anything and everything with me for many years ,we were members of the  BK Endurance team that won the National Champs in 2002. She also gave me a lovely little man, Tom, well 17.2 isn’t really that big is it?  Tom is now 12 going on 4, but hope to be out with him somewhere this year. Flora is an ex racehorse, bred by my brother but too small for National Hunt, only 15.2 in heels, I hope she will be doing the RoR classes this year.

Valerie Walsh

I am originally from Dublin but now live in Shipham and joined the club in 2011. I have always wanted to have my own horse since I was a child. I eventually achieved my dream in May last year (2011) when I bought “Jim”.  He is an eleven year old Irish Sports Horse. We have spent the last few months bonding and getting to know each other and seeing as we are both from Ireland we understand each other and he doesn’t make fun of my accent!!

This year we hope to enter some competitions in dressage, show jumping and maybe even try some cross country!

Jim has “been there and done it all before” but it’s all very new to me still. So, if you are feeling nervous and lacking confidence, come and say hello to me as I’ll probably be feeling the same!

Lynn Pugsley

LynnI have been riding since the age of eleven, when my parents finally relented and let me have lessons, hoping it would put me off…! For the next nineteen years I would beg, borrow and steal (well, maybe not that far!) any equine I possibly could, until at the age of 30, I finally achieved my dream of owning my own horse! Initially I was a happy hacker, but the dressage bug bit and I started competing.

I currently have two ponies, Ooble, who is 6 years old and Charlie who is 4 years old. I’ll have a go at most things, not always that well, but I do try. I wish I was a bit braver when it comes to jumping, that is definitely work in progress! Dressage is the thing I really enjoy, especially dressage to music, which combines my greatest loves, horses, dressage and music!

Bryony AllenBryony

Bryony Allen is our Membership Secretary, she is 30 years old, and works at Langford Veterinary Centre on the Equine yard.

She has a big, young and wobbly youngster who is coming along slowly!!! She likes competing in small showjumping and cross country ( 2’6″ max! )

Dressage is progressing albeit slowly, canter being very hard for her bumbling baby, Jack. She hopes to do more showing in the summer months as in 2009 her boy won an in-hand championship at a members only show so she would like to regain her title.

 Lucy Powell

Lucy PowellI live in Wick st Lawrence with my Fiancé Andy, with 3 mad springer spaniels which we bred and work throughout the shooting season.  I have 3 horses at home, Jack who was my first horse who is now 26, Polo who is 21 and Storm who is 9.  I started riding a 4 years old (well mainly falling asleep while on the lead rein) but Dad was keen for me to ride from a young age!

Jack is now retired but was a total star for many years winning lots in hand and ridden and supreme champion a few times with me riding and Dad in hand, he now has C.O.P.D. so has opted for the easy life of just being pampered and not being ridden!

Polo is my Dad’s shetland who is a massive 10.2hh and is another pampered pet!

I bought Storm (with the help of Andy’s tractor fund!) a couple of years ago from the Saith Stud in Wales, he is my dream horse, we compete in showing and dressage and did our first ODE last year finishing 3rd, we hope to do more jumping and working hunter classes this season.

This is my second year on the committee and Brent Knoll is a really fun and friendly club to be part of.

Sarah Urch

Hi everyone,

I am your Area 12 Secretary and also responsible for Training (lessons). I live in Nailsea and work for Waitrose Cafe in Nailsea. I’ve worked for them now for two years and worked in retail for about fourteen years.

I’ve always had horse in my life, and I started to show them in the lead rain at the age of four, and worked up to the age of twenty-five in the B.S.P.S (SHOWING). I rode at the Royal International and H.O.Y.S for two years so I was over the moon about that as I did it all myself!

I now own two horses and have one on loan. At weekends I do dressage and some showing with them. Barry is now five years old and he has done s/j and x/c schooling but I don’t enjoy doing it anymore, so we stick to dressage and showing.

Todd is my old show hunter pony that I show all the time. He also used to do dressage and s/j when I was still enjoying it! I backed him as a four year old and he is now twenty-two years old, he is still going out to shows and thinks he is about six years old at the moment!

I joined Brent Knoll last year as I really like doing different things with the horse and meeting up for drinks, meals etc. We all get on and help each other in different ways because we all have times when we are nervous. I hold my hands up when it comes to jumping but it’s the teams and lesson that will help you build your confidence and learn. So I say, come along and join in with the fun!
