Latest news from the club
29 October 2021
Dear members, with the arrival of Autumn, we hope you enjoyed the great weather we’ve had in September.
The Members Only Show was a lovely day with lots of great feedback and "thank you's" from those who attended. We were so lucky with the weather, I do think the fact I wore my Wellington boots all day with melting feet, helped the sun stay out!
The In Hand classes had some lively competitors and our judge was very pleased with the standard especially, the best turned out class, how white were some legs. The Ridden wasn’t quite so busy but the judge still had her work cut out. The dressage was well supported for a members only show and riders got to use a very new and fabulous 60x40 arena. Best Overall In Hand went to Ryan Hussey and Woody, Best Overall Ridden went to Kaye Popham and Hennessy.
The Dog show, got a bit lost in translation as it was open to all, members plus their family and friends, basically if you were there with a dog you were welcome to enter. However my old girl Daisy did me proud with a trio of rosettes and plenty chews. Dave did a fabulous job on the bbq keeping everyone, judges included fed. Many Thanks go to Ros and Dave for the use of their facilities.
Area 12 competitions - We were represented by teams at both the Dressage and Show Jumping Area 12 competitions. The SJ team was amazing as they won and only had 3 riders and the Juniors were represented by Abi Clifton who finished a very creditable 5th Rhea has put a full report on the Web site. This meant that both disciplines qualified for the SWWRC held at Hartpury. You can read the results updates from Rhea who is our Area 12 Team organiser to see how they got on.
As a club we are really looking to support juniors at these qualifiers, we have a small handful of juniors in the club who we’d love to get out in teams like the seniors! So if you know of anyone who may be interested do get them to get in touch and make the most of what our membership has to offer.
BKRC Dressage
Our Winter Dressage series is underway you can see the results for the 24 October online and you can enter for the following 3 events in the series - Sunday 28th Nov, Saturday 29th January and Sunday 27th February.
If you’d be interested in doing a Dressage feedback competition (Dressage with Discussion), where you ride a test, the judge then goes through your test sheet with you and you ride the test again, hopefully picking up a few more marks, let us know. It’s a good way to actually get to ask the judge how to get the best marks from your horse and get a rosette for your second test!
Demos & Clinics -
Lessons
Lessons are ongoing (see training timetable), Natalie continues to be popular. Stretcholt dose bump up the cost, and Ros and Dave have kindly said we can use their arena over the winter once a month for lessons at the weekend, Anna House has been booked for these.
Some members don’t have transport and would love to got to lessons and competitions, but just can’t get there. It’s been suggested that we do a Buddy travel help out, if you have space when going somewhere, could you give a member a lift? They in return would be very grateful and show their appreciation, so if you can help out please do, it would really mean a lot to someone without transport.
Club Social evenings
Christmas is looming, we thought it would be nice to get together without any horse in tow! Bev Gore has very kindly agreed to host a social evening with drinks and finger food at her house in Brent Knoll. It’s £5 per person, partners welcome at same cost. There will be a Free Prize draw, your ticket number will go into a draw and 3 prizes will be on offer. The details will be out on the website next month.
AGM
The AGM will be held in January date and venue tbc. We are looking for more committee members to help lighten the load, it’s not too difficult if we can share it with many rather than a few, so if you feel you can help we’d love to have you. We meet once every 4-6 weeks depending on what’s happening and then obviously help as and when at events. Please contact any of the current committee members.
Now is a good time for any friends who are thinking of joining BKRC to join, because if they join anytime from now onwards it includes 2022! So spread the word.
Competition Dates for your Diary
Hope to see you all out somewhere soon.

- The Painted horse demo is being re arranged as lots want to go but just couldn’t make the original date, new date tbc.
- A Bitting Clinic with Charlotte Warman has been suggested, if you’d be interested can you get in touch, than if we have enough interest we can arrange something for the dark nights. Charlotte does a great talk and demo.
- We are hoping to arrange a Tack Sale possibly in Brent Knoll Village Hall so keep a look out for more info.

Latest news from the club
3 July 2021
Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying a little bit more freedom and the lovely weather we have been having and the club has events to report on which is great. Our membership is still steadily increasing, thank you to all those who have joined.
We recently had a team represent Brent Knoll at the Area 12 HT, read the report from Rhea who is our Area 12 Team organiser to see how they got on.
On the 13th June we had Stretch Demo, by Millie Robinson Veterinary Physiotherapist, which was excellent. Millie explained and demonstrated how to do stretches and explained how they worked on different parts of the body not just the part you were stretching, really informative. There were about 14 of us, who afterwards enjoyed a very nice BBQ, excellent burgers cooked by Dave and a catch up on a glorious sunny day, it was so nice to be a bit normal, we are nearly there folks. Thanks to Dave and Ros for hosting and providing the equine models for Millie. Check out Millie on her website Millierobinsonvetphysio.com
Area 12 Show jumping is on 13th July and we are still looking for team members so please contact Rhea if you’re interested, heights are 70cm junior and senior and 80cm seniors.
We are hosting the Area 12 Summer Dressage & Riding Test on 24th July at Kings Sedgmoor EC, so anyone who would like to represent Brent Knoll please let Rhea know ASAP - the schedule has been on the website for a while, and it is a qualifier for the NAF 5 Star National RC Championships at Lincoln and The SWWRC, (South Wales and West of England Riding Clubs) Championships at Hartpury. We will also be needing helpers please, to steward, write collect sheets etc, so if you can do a few hours that would be very much appreciated, we don’t expect you to be there all day, please let Ros know, all helpers will be fed and watered. Vouchers towards club events are available for those doing 4hrs.
On the subject of Vouchers, those that were given out in 2019/2020 will need to be used up by the end of this year, vouchers will now run for 12 months from date of issue, unless Covid says otherwise!
The Dressage series continues, the 2nd one last Saturday as very well attended over 50 entries, with the final one on the 22nd of August. We have some fabulous prizes kindly sponsored by TheraPlate by Bayes to overall points winners which will be presented at the final one.
The Members Only Show is back, it’s at Edithmead, thank you Ros and Dave for hosting, on Sunday 1st August, the schedule will be out shortly and we hope there will be something for everyone, showing, dressage, clear round. Entry fees will be very reasonable, There will also be a Dog Show so your canine friends can hopefully pick up a rosette and Dave will be on BBQ duty again. We have to do Track and Trace, yep boring I know, we need your details in advance please, so let us know if you’re coming along with contact numbers and we are asking you to pay £2 when you let us know, which will then cover the cost of your fabulous burger, if need a veggie one let us know.
We have booked Charlotte Bilson and Natalie Passmore for lessons 12th July and 15th Sept at Stretcholt. We had a few comments that 6pm is too early for some so we will hopefully move it to 6.30 and 7.30. Other lessons are in the pipeline and will be out ASAP.
We have lessons booked with Jonathan Hanson, a dressage rider who moved into the area last year during Covid! He approached the club about teaching, he has some very good results on the BD website, so we thought we’d give him a go, he’s happy to teach flat or jumps, group or individual. It’s going to be at my yard, in Hutton about 5 mins from Weston hospital. Evening lessons- July 8th 15th and 26th. Cost is £22 for a joint lesson of 2, or £30 for an individual 40min lessons. If interested please contact me via email on 07703289129.
Hope to see you all out somewhere soon.

** UPDATE** 2 June 2020
With the Government announcement allowing up to 6 people to meet from different households as long as they observe social distancing, the BRC has provided a further update to their previous guideance. The key change (for England) is below:
Lessons and Training – Lessons and training may now take place in groups of no more than 6. This number of 6 must include the instructor or any additional organiser. BRC clubs and areas may now organise training activities in-line with this maximum number. The type of activity is not limited, as long as it is appropriately risk assessed. All activities must be for training, social, educational or ‘have a go’ purposes, and may not be competitive at this time.

What can I do with my horse under the new rules?
In line with this new Goverment guidance, BRC can now provide all members, clubs and areas with the following updates, effective from today, 13th May 2020. Please note the following updates are BRC’s current interpretation of the most recent government guidance and are subject to change, as and when government advice is updated. The information below is for England Only
- Riding - In England is now encouraged, as long as social distancing and public health, hygiene and bio-security requirements are followed. It should also be noted that riders should consider the risk of their activity, and only partake in activities where it is safe to do so, taking into account both the horse and riders’ capabilities. Riding includes the following details:
- Lessons and Training – Latest government guidance states that you may only exercise in groups of no more than two, unless you are exclusively with members of your household. Therefore, coaches are advised to provide lessons to individuals only, not to groups or household groups, and social distancing must apply. Individuals may now organise their own lessons, but no BRC organised training or clinics are currently permitted. Please see the gov.uk Q&A for further information.
- Hacking – This may be done with members of your own household, or one other individual from another household, as long as social distancing is observed.
- Locations – Any exercise taken must currently be outdoors only.
- Travelling – Travelling both with and without your horse, is now allowed for exercising, training or facility hire. However, travel should not take place across borders into Scotland or Wales, due to their differing travel restrictions. The government do not specify any limits on distance travelled at this time.
- Facility Hire – From today, many facility centres are now able to open for outdoor facility hire, which you can now use.
BRC NAF Five Star National Championships
It is with great disappointment that we announce the cancellation of the above event. We had been hopeful to run the qualifiers and championships, but it has become clear that there is no way to do so whilst maintaining social distancing measures. This would therefore put the safety of staff, volunteers, officials, and competitors at risk, which is of course something that we cannot do. The National Championships is a vast event with approximately 2500 people in attendance across the weekend. It would also be highly unlikely that areas would be able to safely run qualifiers for this throughout July when current measures are highly likely to remain in place for some time. The BRC Advisory Committee have explored numerous options but were unable to find a solution that adhered to government restrictions and was also financially viable to run. We are exploring further online options and will share those with you in due course.
NAF Statement: As long term supporters of British Riding Clubs we would like to take this opportunity to share how disappointed we are that we will not be seeing you all at the NAF Five Star National Championships at Lincoln in 2020. We know just how hard each and every one of you work to qualify and how much amazing support your club gives you at both the qualifiers and the championships themselves. We fully support BRC in their decision for the safety of all of their members and are sure 2021 is going to be an amazing ‘come back’ year, so until then, stay safe, keep in touch, support each other and we will see you in 2021!

BRC TopSpec Dressage to Music Championships
It is still our intention to run this event if at all possible. The Dressage to Music is a relatively small event, with around 250 entries split over three days on site. It can also be run with a small number of key officials. We feel that with changes to current processes e.g. scoreboards and presentations, we would be able to run whilst adhering to any social distancing measures that remain in place. This will of course be subject to areas being able to run qualifiers and enough entries being made to make the event viable. We would also need to re-consider the classes on offer as a pairs class for example, may not be a possibility with the social distancing restrictions that we will have to work to.
It is with regret that the quadrille will not be going ahead this year, even if the Dressage to Music Championship is able to run. The teams would need to practice together in close proximity, and this will not be a possibility with the social distancing measures we are that we are abiding by. The committee have therefore made the decision to cancel this competition for this year.

Festival of the Horse 2021
The Festival of the Horse Championships has been a loss maker for BRC for some time now. The challenge competition incurs quite considerable costs; about as much as a full one-day-event, and entry fees and numbers at qualifier level simply do not cover these costs. We had hoped to run the challenge in a slightly different format for 2020, along with increased entry fees, to see if this would make the competition more viable. Unfortunately with the increased financial risk for this competition, combined with the fact that it is unlikely that qualifiers for the event will be able to run this autumn as usual, a decision has been made to run the event as a Combined Training Championships in 2021. The same combined training classes will take place, but there will be no challenge classes at the event.
We remain a member-driven organisation and are always keen to hear what our members want with regards to competition opportunities, so we welcome feedback on the challenge classes, and their popularity within your clubs and area.

BRC Online Competitions
- Online Competitions – BRC organised online ridden competitions can now resume. BRC will be re-starting their leagues with Interdressage once again, for current, ridden dressage tests. If members / clubs / areas wish to also organise or partake in online jumping events, this is permitted as long as the appropriate risk assessments have been carried out that deem it to be a safe activity to resume. However, BRC will not be resuming our official jumping leagues at this time.
- We are aware that British Dressage do not permit their dressage tests to be used for online activities without a license. BRC have therefore re-published the BRC dressage tests that we have used in the past and these are available for free use, to help with running online competitions. The tests can be found on our website, and the scoresheets are on the BHS Cloud for free download and printing. Please feel free to use these resources as required.
- Other BRC Activities – Apart from the online competitions mentioned above, no other BRC activities are currently permitted.
Flu Vaccinations
BRC will continue to enforce the 2020 flu vaccination rules from 1 October 2020, including the six-monthly booster rule. This is to give anyone affected by the Covid-19 lockdown the opportunity to rectify any issues. Anyone competing at a qualifier before 1 October 2020 with an incorrect record will be given a flu vaccination failure form with an instruction to rectify the record. To clarify, if your horse was due its annual booster during the lockdown period when vets were unable to attend, then you will need to restart your vaccinations programme. However, if you had a six-monthly booster since your last annual injection, then you can use this as your new ‘annual’ vaccination, and so would not have to re-start.
** UPDATE ** 27 March 2020 - Following the CoronaVirus lockdown, the BHS and BRC have put together the following Q&As to help provide horse owners with some answers to our many questions around how we can comply with the lockdown whilst caring for, riding or visiting our horses.
|
17 March 2020 - Following Government advice to minimise social contact and non-essential travel and with further daily updates being provided to help battle CoronaVirus, we have taken the decision to cancelling all BKRC events - clinics, lessons and competitions - scheduled over the immediate weeks. This includes our biting clinic and spring show. BRC has also advised that Regional and National competitions are being cancelled until further notice.
We are sorry to disappoint, but hope you can all understand why we have had to take this course of action. We will advise as more information is made available when these can be re-instated.

Merry Christmas from BKRC!!
16 Nov 2018
What a jolly Christmas advent show! Thank you to all who attended the final BKRC show of 2018. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. The classes were well attended and the effort put into the turnout was superb. We were all particularly taken with this wonderful ode to Christmas. Our thanks particularly to the judges and volunteers to whom the event could not run. What better way to wrap up the year! Merry Christmas all.
We look forward to seeing you at our events next year! |
